Recorded by Naylor during a stay in his hometown of Charlotte, Vermont in August of 2009, the Notes EP is a reflective set of expansive instrumentals and soundscapes, drawing on elements of rock, jazz, minimalism, and noise. Naylor recorded Notes in a single week during an extended visit to his hometown of Charlotte, Vermont, a year after moving to New York City. Describing the impetus for the project, Naylor says “I’ve always had an interest in creating home demos of songs that I write. I wanted to see if I could take that attitude I have towards demos and actually make a project,” as well as “capture my mindset and my attitude for five days alone in a house in Vermont.” Accordingly, many of the songs on the EP were borne from extended improvisations. “Very rarely do I go about writing a piece of music with an intended form in mind from the outset…or an idea of where it’s going to go. The entire compositional process is based on improvising,” and therefore, the resulting piece “becomes a representation of the moment when it was written.”
The contrast between the peaceful, bucolic setting of rural New England and the bustling, sometimes abrasive nature of New York City is reflected in the stylistic DNA of the EP, which incorporates elements such as noise and drone as well as minimalism and rock. “The ideas of noise and hissing are things I had never experienced until I had spent a year living in New York,” says Naylor. He comments that the challenge lies in answering the question: “How can I take these noises and incorporate them into a more relaxed, homey setting?” The result lies between the two opposites, a thirty-minute set of experimental instrumentals that appeal to both the immediate and the subconscious, encouraging both focused, meditative listening and detached mind-wandering. Again, Naylor: “The music itself is really important, but equally important is where your mind goes where you’re listening to it…that’s a huge part of the experience.” In this regard, the Notes EP achieves a transcendental quality, tapping into a part of the human experience that is always present but rarely given attention. In short, “you can create your own meaning for it.”
